The Leadville/Lake County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a weekend of tasting BBQ and fine local microbrews, topped off with live music starting Friday, June 21.
Along with the BBQ event, there will be a family zone with numerous activities.
Friday morning, the National Anthem starts the day at 10 a.m. Live music on the stage starts at 11:45 a.m. Friday. See separate story for a rundown of the bands.
Featured will be BBQ prepared by some of the country’s best pitmasters with a great microbrew to wash it down.
This is a Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) sanctioned event, which is also a cup event for the Rocky Mountain BBQ Association.
Pitmasters will cook chicken, pork ribs, pork, and brisket and compete for $10,152 in prizes—one dollar for each foot of Leadville’s elevation. Taste a BBQ you especially like? Give that chef a vote for the People’s Choice Award!
In addition to barbeque, the event celebrates regional craft beer, including Colorado microbrews from Leadville’s own Periodic Brewing.
The Chamber also will be sponsoring a “kids Q” for the children. Starting Friday afternoon, children ages 5 to 15, accompanied by an adult, can compete by cooking a meat of their choosing to be judged and scored for a chance at a trophy and cash.
The food and fun continues until 10 p.m. and resumes the next day, Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. again, An awards ceremony will take place in the afternoon for the BBQ competitors. Food sales continue till 5 p.m.
As in the past, people will purchase Leadbills to spend during the event. These will be available at the event, but can also be purchased in advance at the Visitor Center, 710 Harrison Avenue.
