Likewise many people check out our Web site each week. A number of these people are part-timers, some are former residents and others are visitors who found something special in Leadville and like to keep an eye on what's happening here.
So we'd like to ask a favor of all who are reading this.
As you know, we've been in the news lately. (There's an understatement, right?) As of this writing we're all alive and well. Treading water has not been an issue. A temporary fix is in place to pump water out of the Gaw shaft. In a few months, construction will be completed so water can be pumped directly out of the Leadville Mine Drainage Tunnel and piped to the treatment plant so any contamination can be removed.
U. S. Congressmen Doug Lamborn (R) and Mark Udall (D) are sponsoring a bill in the House of Representatives, and U.S. Senator Ken Salazar (D) is sponsoring a bill in the Senate for funding to permanently fix our problem.
So first, wherever you are, we need you to contact your own members of congress and senators and urge them to vote in favor of these bills. This problem has existed for many, many years, and a solution is needed right now.
When you contact your congressman, refer to H.R. 5511, The Leadville Mine Drainage Tunnel Remediation Act of 2008. When you contact your senators, the bill is S. 2680, The Leadville Mine Drainage Tunnel Environmental Impact Act of 2008.
The second thing you can do is talk up Leadville as a great tourist destination. We don't want the negative publicity about the disaster declaration to cause people to avoid our city and perhaps even our state when they are making their vacation plans for the summer. Assure them that they will be just fine if they visit here. You already know how much we have to offer.
Finally, think about coming for a visit yourself. The more bodies in town, the easier it will be for our businesses to weather this temporary situation. We'd like to see you at the St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 17 and later at the Silver Dollar for corned beef and cabbage. We'd like you to be part of our great July 4 celebration and enjoy the best big fireworks a small city ever presented. We'd like to see you running or biking in or even spectating at our many races including the world-renowned races put on by the Trail 100. And for sure we want to see you at Boom Days, which is always kind of a major homecoming event for Leadville anyhow.
You've asked us what you can do. Stand with us and give us your support. We'll get through this.
