Austin J. “Mac” McKenna

Austin J. “Mac” McKenna was born in Leadville to Joseph J. McKenna and Mary E. Hazeltine on Jan. 11, 1923. He died May 1.

He spent his formative years in Salida and attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco following graduation from Salida High School. His family ran the Crews-Beggs stores in both Leadville and Salida.

During World War II, he proudly trained at Camp Hale and served with the famed “ski troops” of the Army’s 10th Mountain Division -- 126th Combat Engineers, where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. McKenna also played an integral part in the formation and ongoing operations of the 10th Mountain Division Association in Colorado in the years to follow.

He was an executive in the Denver advertising industry and an artist.

He was preceded in death by wives Mary Lou and Frances, and survived by son Sean, of Silt; daughters Mary Pat (Ed), of Cave Creek, Ariz., and Maureen (Peter) of Boulder; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
