Public entities, businesses and highways across Lake County closed last week due to heavy snowfall and hazardous avalanche conditions.

City of Leadville Street Department workers and hired contractors worked around the clock to keep the city’s streets clear, Mayor Greg Labbe told the Herald last week.

Though the city’s streets are now drivable, maintenance work is ongoing as snow piles up on street corners and alley entrances. “The snow piles are so large that it takes an entire day to clear about three blocks,” Labbe said. “Since there are more than 200 blocks in Leadville, the task is monumental.”
