Henry Greene rounds a corner during a skate race in Steamboat Springs on Saturday.

The Lake County High School Nordic team traveled to the Steamboat Springs Touring Center for a regular season skate race on Saturday, Jan. 21.

The five-kilometer course starts off with rolling, gentle climbs before ascending to the high point at the end of kilometer four. The course then descends back to the touring center and ends with a quick sprint around a field.

Brynna Lenhard executed her race plan to perfection and placed second overall, the best finish of her career. Susie Bullock placed 15th as the second Panther in the standings. Indigo Olsen, Clara Kirr and Keira King finished within a few seconds of one another in 18th, 20th and 22nd respectively. Aimee Lenhard improved upon her first skate race of the season to place 30th, qualifying her for the state meet in skating.

The Panther women placed third overall as a team, a few points behind Battle Mountain and winner Poudre School District.

“It was cold, so the course was a bit slow. Our team was undaunted, very enthusiastic, and skied well. The girls all qualified for state,” noted assistant coach Ben Arndt.

Raymond Harvey led the Lake County men’s team with a 58th-place finish. Izayah Baxter and Matthew Wilson finished a few seconds apart in 68th and 69th places. Henry Greene was only a bit behind in 74th place, and Orion Baxter rounded out the team in 91st place. The Panther men were ninth overall as a team.

Coach Arndt commented that “the boys’ team is making steady improvements with each practice and race and skied great today.”

The next race for Lake County is a classic race at Maloit Park in Minturn on Saturday, Jan. 28.
