The Lake County High School (LCHS) boys basketball team shoots hoops during practice at LCHS on Monday, Dec. 5.

The Lake County High School boys basketball season tipped off last week, and the Panthers are off to a hot start with two wins and one loss so far.

The excitement started on Tuesday, Nov. 29 when the Panthers traveled south to face off in a revenge game against former Panther head coach Randy Flores and his new team, the Demons of Buena Vista High School.

The Panthers came out on top, securing a final score of 56-53 through an overall defensive effort.

That weekend, the team traveled to Edwards to play in a multi-team tournament and lost their Friday night matchup against Vail Christian High School with a score of 58-76.

On Saturday, the Panthers secured a 58-55 victory against the Vail Mountain School Gore Rangers.

Head coach Isaac Martinez is feeling good about the season so far and is excited to get back to his roots as a Lake County basketball alumnus.

Martinez has been wanting to coach high school basketball for a while and received the opportunity when an opening came up for this season. He said it’s been super helpful to have a trusting and responsive team to work with.

“We’ll have some growing pains, but I don’t think there’s anything we can’t work through,” said Martinez.

The Panthers’ next game will be at home against the Center High School Vikings on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 10, the team will play another home game against the Cotopaxi Pirates at 5 p.m.
