Last weekend’s snow storm didn’t keep the Lake County High School track and field teams from competing in their first meet of the season. Thanks to local snow plow drivers and the team’s courageous bus driver Polecat, the team made it safely to Pueblo for the Banana Belt Invitational. Most of the schools that competed Saturday are much larger than Lake County, but the Panthers still displayed strong performances.
Ivan Liewer took sixth place in the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet, 8 inches, a mark very close to his personal best.
The women’s 4x400-meter relay team of Maggie Roeder, Tal Sheleg, Irani Pina and Indigo Olsen also placed sixth with a total time of 5 minutes, 6 seconds. Roeder, Pina and Indigo Olsen then teamed up with Amara Olsen for the 4x200m relay. That group finished seventh in 2:06.
Sheleg cut 50 seconds off her best 1,600m time, dropping under seven minutes and completing the four laps of the track in 6:51. Most of the Panther long jumpers set personal records (PRs): Amara Olsen added over a foot to reach 12’8”, Canaan Hall leapt 15’3.23” and Evan Vigil jumped 13’8”.
Martin Garcia improved his 300m hurdle PR by 2.5 seconds, crossing the finish line in 52.80 seconds. Both Roeder and Amara Olsen set PRs in the 200m dash, finishing in 32.90 and 33.05 seconds respectively.
Jaren Peters posted the fourth fastest 3,200m time by a freshman in the last 20-plus years. It was the first 3,200m race of his career and his time was 12:07.
Sophomore Jaxon Wood completed his first 400m race in under a minute, running once around the track in 59.68 seconds.
In his first track meet, freshman Brendan Sandoval led the Panthers’ discus throwers with a toss of 75’10”. Iwo Krupa had the team’s farthest shot put with his mark of 28’11”.
The teams will take next week off for spring break before returning to action later this month.
