Jose Ruben Maestas, a long-time resident of Leadville, passed away on March 26 at the age of 92. Maestas was recently living in Hernandez, New Mexico. Maestas was preceded in death by his parents, Cosme and Casandra Maestas, his loving wife of 68 years, Otilia Gonzales Maestas, and grandson Troy Vasquez.
Maestas joined the U.S. Navy in the early 1940s and was a World War II veteran. According to his family, he was a loving husband and father. He was a hard worker who worked in the mines in Leadville for over 40 years until he retired.
Maestas raised five children: Jerry Maestas (MaryAnn), Rudy Maestas (Dorothy), Hazel Quintana (Julian), Sandra Vasquez (Bonifacio) and Debbie Cisneros (Eli). He also has several loving grandchildren: Kenneth Quintana (Rebecca), Nathan Quintana (Yvonne), Troy Vasquez, Erica Vasquez (Steve), Melissa, Steven and Jennifer Maestas, Bernadette Cisneros-Frank (Buck) and Bridgette Cisneros. He also has 11 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Maestas was laid to rest at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. His family said he will be greatly missed.
