Toby F. Atencio

Toby F. Atencio, age 98, passed away in Colorado Springs on Sept. 20. He was preceded in death by his wife Sista M. Atencio on June 17, 2017. At the time of her death, they had been married 72 years.

Toby was born Aug. 30, 1923 in Carnero Creek near La Garita to Patricio and Emelia Atencio. Sista was born Feb. 12, 1927 in Garcia to Eloy and Luz Arellano. They were married on Nov. 30, 1944 in Monte Vista.

In 1949, the couple moved to Leadville, where Toby worked at the Leadville Smelter, and later at Climax Mine as a miner. He later worked in the assay lab as an assayer at Climax for many years until he retired in 1982. Upon retirement, the couple moved to Colorado Springs.

Toby and Sista enjoyed bowling and traveled to many tournaments across the country. They also enjoyed camping, fishing, and visiting family and friends. They especially loved to dance. Toby enjoyed hunting and going to car races.

The couple was preceded in death by two sons and a daughter who died at birth, their son-in-law Alfred Gallegos and their grandson Kenneth Dwayne Montoya.

The couple is survived by their nine children: Gloria Gallegos of Brighton; Margaret Humphreys (Dan) of Thornton; Sally Montoya of Colorado Springs; Patti Lopez (Jim) of Colorado Springs; Shirley Holmberg (Mike) of Lewistown, Montana; Toby R. Atencio of Colorado Springs; Loretta Vigil (Dennis) of Leadville; David Atencio of Colorado Springs; and Robert Atencio (Tammi) of Sedalia. They are also survived by 21 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren.  

A funeral service will be held in Leadville at Annunciation Catholic Church on Oct. 9. A rosary will be held at 10 a.m. and a funeral Mass at 11 a.m.
