Dorothy Ann Gillan

Dorothy Ann Gillan passed away on Nov. 12 in Haceinda Heights, California at the age of 85.

Gillan was born on April 26, 1936 in Leadville to Anton and Dorothy Zalar. She grew up in Leadville with her sister Betty Jean.

After completing high school, Gillan attended and graduated from Saint Mary College with a degree in music. She later earned a master’s degree in music from Azusa Pacific University in California. She was an accomplished soprano opera singer.

Gillan married Robert Burns Gillan at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Leadville. Dorothy and Robert renewed their vows on their 50th wedding anniversary again at Saint Joseph Catholic Church on July 2, 2010.

Gillan had lived in Hacienda Heights since 1972. She taught music for the Walnut School District for 22 years.

Gillan was always rooted in Leadville and continued to subscribe to the Herald Democrat until her passing.

Gillan was preceded in death by her husband Robert Burns Gillan.

Gillan is survived by her son Charles Gillan; her daughters Annette Messmer and Paula Graziano; her grandsons Matthew Graziano, John Graziano, Luc Messmer and Max Messmer; her sister Betty Jean Herrick; her nephew and nieces Scott Herrick, Lisa Herrick, Karen Gillan and Kathy Gillan; and many other grand-nieces and nephews, including Sepp Kuss.

Gillan’s funeral was held at Saint John Vianney Catholic Church in Hacienda Heights, California on Nov. 30.
