Derald Dewayne Maxwell

Derald Dewayne “Max” Maxwell passed away on May 26 at the age of 84. He was born in Red Wing, Minnesota on April 23, 1937.

Maxwell was raised in Red Wing and attended Red Wing High School. Upon graduation, he attended Mankato State University and earned his bachelor’s degree in education.

Maxwell began his teaching and coaching career in Minnesota with his wife Doris and their first born daughter Cam. Soon after beginning their teaching careers, the couple made the move out west to Alamosa, where they accepted teaching positions and where their second child, Deb, was born. Maxwell coached many different sports in Alamosa. He also attended Adams State University and earned his master’s in education administration.

The couple eventually moved to Leadville, where they both accepted teaching positions with the Lake County School District and had their third child, Greg. Maxwell eventually left the classroom and coaching to take administrative positions in the junior high school and high school in Leadville. Maxwell was serving as the athletic director and assistant principal at Lake County High School when he retired in 1992.

Outside of school, Maxwell was an outdoorsman with a passion for hunting and fishing that he shared with his family. He was an avid sports fan of many of the Colorado sports teams, which he also passed on to his children. He officiated football and basketball games well into his retirement.

After Doris retired from teaching, the couple made the move south to Salida in the summer of 1994. They lived in Salida up until Doris’ passing in December 2014 and Max’s last month.

According to his family, Maxwell lived life to the fullest and could often be found in a lively conversation that would bring a smile to someone’s face. Most everyone who met or knew him has a story to tell.

Maxwell was preceeded in death by his parents Robert Theodore Maxwell and Dorothy Wilhelmina Maxwell; his brother Robert Maxwell; and his wife Doris Maxwell.

Maxwell is survived by his brother Randy Maxwell; his daughters  Cammy Maxwell (Coronato) and Debby Maxwell (Miller); his son Greg Maxwell; his grandchildren Alyssa Coronato (Malezija), Kyle Coronato, Mya Maxwell, Josh Miller, Faith Miller and Mette Maxwell; and his great-grandchildren Lucas, Addie and Morgan Malezija.
