Nestled high in the mountains of central Colorado, it’s no secret that Leadville and Twin Lakes are special places on this terrestrial ball.
The area’s natural beauty has led to two things: An authentic life in the mountains for residents and, most recently, a bustling tourism economy which attracts thousands of visitors each year. But let’s not mince words here – there’s a mixed bag of emotions surrounding the latter in our community.
The Herald Democrat primarily exists for our residents, but we’ve also been in the tourism game for some time now. Twice a year in collaboration with our sister papers, we produce Discover magazine, a free guide to communities in the Arkansas River Valley, including Buena Vista, Salida and Poncha Springs. The magazine has been a resource for visitors to the area for years.
Well, after years of change here in the high country, we decided that Leadville and Twin Lakes deserve a publication of their own – something that celebrates our home as a truly unique destination for recreation, history and downtown fun, while also mapping out ways to visit respectfully and sustainably. That way, everyone is happy when they’re here.
As a result, the Herald is proud to introduce The Official Guide to Leadville & Twin Lakes. Starting this spring, our twice-annual feature in Discover magazine will become two seasonal publications dedicated to the wonders of Leadville and Twin Lakes and the important work local stakeholders are doing to inspire a new wave in tourism.
We’re excited about this project for a number of reasons, not the least of which is a new partnership between the Herald and Visit Leadville-Twin Lakes (formerly the Lake County Tourism Panel).
The partnership works like this. We at the Herald will work with Leadville-Twin Lakes to develop the magazine, meaning they will help us identify recreation and history assets that visitors are looking for, and we will tell the story like we have for more than a century. The magazine will also be full of the tourism messaging that Leadville-Twin Lakes has been pushing for the last few years.
Then, Visit Leadville-Twin Lakes will help us distribute the magazine to the Arkansas River Valley and beyond, including the 1-70 corridor and some communities near the front range. This is important because it allows us to reach visitors where they are at, while they are planning a trip to visit us.
The Herald is also excited to grow our reach of local freelance photographers and writers to contribute to the magazine. If you have someone in mind or an idea for a story, send them our way by emailing editor@leadvilleherald.com.
From managing visitation in a fun and thoughtful way, to celebrating everything we love about Leadville and Twin Lakes, we have high hopes for The Official Guide to Leadville & Twin Lakes, which represents the same high-quality production of Discover magazine, just with a hyper focus on our community.
We can’t wait for it to hit the stands this spring -- just in time for the snow to start melting and summer activites to begin
